This is a little teaser ahead of the Pack of Wolves Punch & Judy performance at Milkwood Gallery on Saturday 2 March 2013.

The show will be performed in the tradition of the classic Punch & Judy performances of old. The various episodes of the show will provoke shocked laughter and will be dominated by the anarchic clowning of Mr. Punch.

Milkwood Gallery will be open from 6.00pm on Saturday the 2 March 2013 with the Punch & Judy show and a Jabberwocky shadow puppet show being performed at approximately 7.00pm.

The ‘Once Upon Again’ exhibition continues until the 9 March 2013.

Synchronous Red Hermaphrodites 817 | Spike Dennis 2013

Red Unicorn Embroidery Red Unicorn Embroidery

I’ve just finished this red unicorn embroidery. It’s been a good couple of months in the making due to some other projects I’ve had going on that have had more pressing deadlines. It’s good to have finally finished it.

It’s the first in a series of embroideries and is titled Synchronous Red Hermaphrodites 817. It’s been created using a split stitch with cotton thread on linen.

I’ll pop a full set of images up in my online gallery once it’s pressed and framed so keep your eyes peeled for those.

#imapiece Jigsaw Piece | Spike Dennis

My First Imapiece Jigsaw Piece

So I’m a little late getting started making my pieces for the Craftivist Collective’s #Imapiece jigsaw project but here’s my first piece. I hand embroidered my message onto a combination of pink and grey fabrics.

Of course I’ve still another piece to complete. Hopefully I’ll have finished that by the end of the weekend too. I’ll write up a full and proper blog post once that’s completed. In the meantime you can find out more about the Crafivist Collective and their jigsaw project here: www.imapiece.craftivist-collective.com

Work in Progress: Punch & Judy Puppets

Punch & Judy Puppets

We’ve recently been working on some Punch & Judy puppets for the Pack of Wolves’ exhibition at Milkwood Gallery that opens later this month. I was tasked with working on the policemen and doctor puppets pictured here. They’re still both works in progress at this stage but they’ll be finished in good time for a dress rehearsal.

The painting of the heads for these puppets was undertaken by fellow member of the Pack of Wolves, Layla Holzer. She has also painted up a wonderful crocodile puppet which I’ve yet to make a body for.

The exhibition at Milkwood gallery opens on the 27 February and runs until the 9 March. we will be performing our Punch and Judy Puppet show on Saturday the 2 March along with a shadow puppet show of the Jabberwocky.

Gold Caviar Embroidery

Gold Caviar Embroidery

Gold Caviar Embroidery

This is a little test I mocked up recently ahead of a commission. I was testing a couple of different types of gold thread. Due to the fine nature of the image that I need to complete I’m not able to use the DMC metallic floss that I would normally use. It tends to fray a little with the metallic finish being wrapped around a cotton thread.

Instead I’ve settled for Madeira metallised polyester fibres. The work is being completed on a black velvet which is particularly effective with this thread.

Woodcut Work in Progress

Woodcut Work in Progress

This is another little snapshot of the piece I’m currently working on for the Pack of Wolves’ next exhibition which will take place at Milkwood Gallery in spring 2013.

It’s my first time cutting wood to make a block print but I’m enjoying the process so far. It’s bee a steep learning curve but the work is progressing steadily now.

Work in Progress: Woodcut Transfer

Work in Progress: Woodcut Transfer | Spike Dennis 2012

Having sketched out my drawings for the Baba Yaga embroidery I’ve now transferred an outline of the sketch to a sheet of wood ready to cut out. I had to flip the image first however as a print from a woodblock needs to be carved out in reverse in order to create a positive print.

I’ve sealed the drawing onto the surface of the wood with clear varnish. It’s quite a large piece and I don’t want the lay out to smudge off as I work across it.

This will possibly the most time I have ever spent preparing an image for an embroidery. Fingers crossed the end result will be worth the lengthy process.

Pen and Ink Baba Yaga Sketch

Pen & Ink Baba Yaga Drawing on Paper | Spike Dennis 2012

I’m currently working on a design for a new embroidery for the Pack of Wolves’ next exhibition – Once Upon Again – at Milkwood Gallery in Cardiff next spring.

The ‘brief’ for the exhibition has presented me with a new challenge in working with narrative based sources materials from old fairy tales – this one is from an old Russian tale about Baba Yaga. I’ve taken my inspiration for the layout of this piece of work from the old hand embroidered samplers that were produced by people wishing to practices their stitching in years gone by.

Once Upon Again Preparation

Saturday, December 1st, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

These are some of the sketches I’ve been working on in preparation for a new work I’m undertaking for the Pack of Wolves’ next exhibition – ‘Once Upon Again’ – next year.

The drawings are inspired the old Russian folk tale about a young girl called Vasilissa who encounters an old witch know as the Baba Yaga. As with many old fairy tales there are different versions of the Baba Yaga story and I’ve taken my inspiration from different versions of these to produce the sketches pictured here which include a cat weaving threads, a dog eating bread and Vasilissa running away with a skull lantern.
