The Circle of Life

This was just a little experiment to try out some freeware camera capture software I got a hold of for my laptop documenting the creation of one of my recent Unicorn-Porn drawings. It’s a little rough and ready but the software works a treat and I’m quite happy with the results.

I created the video using Nikontrol3k/SM Tether software and Windows Live Movie Maker along with my Nikon D40, a 1.0mm ball gel pen and a white bullet tip Posca marker.

The music is the Ed Rush and Optical remix of the house classic French Kiss by Li’l Louis which was edited using Audacity.

A Monster Calls

Saturday, January 7th, 2012
Posted in: Blog

This trailer for the book ‘A Monster Calls’ has been beautifully illustrated by Jim Kay. The last book trailer that captured my attention so vividly was Graham Rawle’s ‘Wizard of Oz’ video.

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting– he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth.

Night in a Surreal Forest

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

This short clip is from a 1941 newsreel, featuring scenes from a Salvador Dali-hosted event called ‘Night in a Surreal Forest’. Held on September 2, 1941, in California, the dinner was a fundraiser for artists in exile during the Second World War. Notable invitees included Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Ginger Rogers, but of course it was Dali’s wife wearing a unicorn on her head that grabbed my attention.

Shadow Play: Peter & The Wolf

Thursday, December 15th, 2011
Posted in: Blog

I headed over to Tommy’s Bar in Cardiff last night to watch some wonderous shadow puppet shows by Year 1 & 2 Illustration Students from Cardiff School of Art & Design. The puppets were absolutely beautiful and all of the performances were totally spellbinding.

This performance of Peter and The Wolf by Layla Holzer was the first of the night and set the perfect tone for the rest of the evening. This was followed by Hans Christian-Andersen’s The Snow Queen which was told in seven parts. Clips of those tales will be available to view via the Illustration Cardiff blog in the next few days.

Mound by Allison Schulnik from garaco taco on Vimeo.

I was quite drawn in by the strange figures in this stop-motion video by Alison Schulnik. It’s a haunting little film worth a watch. There are also some lovely drawings and paintings on her website: www.allisonschulnik.com

Naughty Monsters

She sharpened her teeth while she hummed a sweet tune; “It’s only wrong if you get caught… it’s only wrong if you get caught”…

- Oh my! What a big mouth you have!
- All the better to eat you with, my dear…

This ‘behind the scenes’ video is from the Sex & Design Halloween Naughty Monsters photo-shoot with the photographer Aeschleigh DeMartino.

It’s been all about mask her in Spikeworld lately. This video reminded me of some prints that Tado produced a short while back; if a little less kitsch. I really am going to have to get around to making some masks of my own soon.

Compressed 02

Compressed 02 from Kim Pimmel on Vimeo.

I came across this wonderful video on the Colossal blog over the weekend. The artist, Kim Pimmel describes them as analogue generative experiments. It’s wizardry to me, plain and simple. I can’t quite get my head around how this works but watching the food colouring travelling through the bubble structures is truly mesmerising.

You can view more of Kim Vimmel’s videos on his Vimeo channel here.

Jerry’s Map

Jerry’s Map from Jerry Gretzinger on Vimeo.

“Since 1963, Jerry Gretzinger has been working on a cartographic work of art that has taken on a life of its own.”

Foomandoonian very kindly drew my attention to this lovely video about Jerry’s Map on chromafeed.tv. I particularly like Jerry’s use of the customised playing cards which reminds me of complex tabletop strategy games that I used to play when I was younger. Although Jerry has created the cards himself it’s an interesting way of removing a small element of control of the evolution of the work out of the hands of the artist.

There are obsessive traits apparent within my own work but they’re not a patch on Jerry who has been working on this map for almost fifty years.
