Exhibition Planning

With my being involved in two exhibitions at Milkwood Gallery back-to-back I thought I’d better re-visit the space whilst it was empty to get an idea of the size and shape of the space available.

They’re crude sketches but they’re functional and I’m happy now that the gallery will neither be too cluttered nor too bare.

The first exhibition, Project Cardiff, opens on Saturday 2 February and features a set of photographs taken by Lann Niziblian. The second exhibition will present the first time I’ve ever exhibited my own work at Milkwood Gallery as the Pack of Wolves take over the space for Once Upon again.

Once Upon Again Homework

These are a couple of sketches that I drew as a part of my research for the next Pack of Wolves exhibition which is entitled Once Upon Again.

Once upon Again will be an exhibition of fairy tale inspired work. The title suggests the idea of re-imagined narratives – taking existing fairy and folk tales and retelling them.

The sketches above are inspired by the Russian tale about a witch named Baba Yaga and a Norwegian fairy tale called Tatterhood. I’m working towards some new embroidered works for this exhibition – these sketches are just the start.

Baba Yaga

In Russian folklore there are many stories of Baba Yaga, the fearsome witch with iron teeth. Her nose is so long that it rattles against the ceiling of her hut when she snores, stretched out in all directions upon her ancient brick oven. Not being a boringly-conventional witch, she does not wear a hat, and has never been seen on a broomstick. She travels perched in a large mortar with her knees almost touching her chin, and pushes herself across the forest floor with a pestle.

Tatterhood

The tale of Tatterhood is quite common in Norway and Iceland and tells the tale of a beautiful princess and her ugly twin ‘Tatterhood’.

During a battle with the trolls the beautiful sister’s head is snatched off by a troll and replaced with a calf’s head, after which the trolls flee from the castle. To restore her sister’s head, Tatterhood sets off in a ship with no crew or company aside from her own sister. They arrive at the isle of the trolls and Tatterhood battles the trolls and successfully regain her sister’s head.

‘Once Upon Again’ will be exhibited at Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff, in February/March 2013. For more information visit www.packofwolves.org

Southerdown Sketchbook

Saturday, February 18th, 2012
Posted in: Artwork, Blog

I’ve been having a big tidy up lately and this weekend I found this little postcard sized sketchbook tucked away at the back of the studio. It’s from my college days and a good ten years old now. I completed the book at Southerndown beach on the South Wales coast using water colour pencils.

Carnivalesque Notes

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011
Posted in: Blog

The crowning of a mock king or queen
for an opening event or special
occasion.
Audience as performers? Riding hobby
horses/unicorns; dressing in cloaks
or masks; wearing claws or feet;
wielding props or other items
eg. a staff, a sword, a frying pan.
How about having animals in the space?
Miniature pigs grotesque and pink.
It wouldn’t be a carnival without
song and dance; ‘Always’ by Erasure.
Angel Delight, cocktail sausages,
jelly and ice cream, cake.
Maybe a rainbow walkway through the space.
A cage? A caged person? A caged unicorn?
A caged Minotaur? A freak-show? A zoo?

Post-It Notes

Here are a few images from Spike’s book of Post-It notes. Spike’s Fine Art work often starts life here in this book of Post-It notes; the links between these doodles and the finished pieces of (in particular Fine Art) work may appear tenuous but Spike appreciates the low value attributed to these sticky labels and regularly uses them to work out his initial ideas.
