Frederique Morrel - Needlpoint Unicorn

These wondrous creations are the work of the artist duo known as Frederique Morrel.

These exquisite sculptures are created using fibre glass taxidermy moulds which are then injected with expanding foam. The tapestries used to embellish the sculptures are vintage works that have been salvaged from jumble sales and markets. The old embroideries are collected together and reworked into the surfaces of these new works of art.

I’m always interested to see new and interesting ways of making and presenting embroidered works of art and these are certainly some of the most well produced and high impact works I’ve come across so far. You can view more of Frederique Morrel’s work at www.frederiquemorrel.com.

Salvabear Dali | Handmade Bedside Lamp

This is my new bedside lamp that I assembled from a plush teddy bear and a light fitting. It’s a simple creation – after removing the bear’s head I built an armature from wood and wire to place inside the bear giving the plush body some support to ensure it sits upright and holds the weight of the lightbulb and lamp shade.

Lady Violet is one of a series of dolls that I’ve been working on this year. It might be argued that she is the most beautiful of the collection being embellished in a purple and black design inspired by markings used to decorate items used to celebrate Día de los Muertos.

There will eventually be seven dolls in this collection. You can see the dolls that have been finished so far in my gallery here (be warned the gallery images may offend).

Collaboration Part 5: Hairy Heads

We had another productive weekend this week working on our pieces for the fairytale exhibition next month. We didn’t get all the work done that we’d have liked to as we were awaiting the delivery of some materials but we still made good progress. Two of our characters, Little Red and Joringel were adorned with nice full heads of raven black hair as you can see above.

Collaboration Part 4: Illustrated Objects

Here are some more snippets from the collaborative creatures I’m working on at the moment with Layla Holzer. I thin you’ll agree that the nightingale painted up by Layla is a real thing of beauty. That particular piece will form a part of the puppet that illustrates the Grimm’s Jorinda and Joringel story.

Collaboration Part 3: Body Parts

These are some images of the body parts I stitched together over the weekend as part of a collborative project I’m working on with the magical illustrator Layla Holzer.

The final puppets will take a puppet-like form constructed from a range of materials. These Louise Bourgeois-esque body parts have been constructed from pink towelling and silicon baby bottle teats for our Rapunzel figure.

As previously mentioned on this blog I’ve recently started working on some collaborative sculptures with the wonderful illustrator Layla Holzer. The work is being prepared for a an exhibition of fairy tale inspired works that are to be exhibited at St Donat’s Art Centre next month.

We’ve chosen to work with three stories by the Brothers Grimm which are Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and the lesser known Jorinda and Joringel. We’re working on puppet like sculptures that will encapsulate elements of the fairy tales and the themes that these stories explore. The fur lined vessel pictured above is a piece we’ve been working on for Little Red Riding Hood’s puppet.

Collaboration: Part 1

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Collaboration, Work In Progress

This last week I commenced work on a new collaborative project with the wonderfully talented fairy tale illustrator Layla Holzer in preparation for a rather exciting exhibition next month.

The work is in it’s very infancy as you can see from the papier-mâché cocoons pictured above. There’s rather a lot of work to be done in a relatively short space of time so I’m not going to give to much about the project just yet but you might find a clue in my previous post. I can assure you that the work will be delightfully dark and magical and you can expect plenty of updates on here though as the work progresses.

In the mean time you might like to go check out some of Layla’s work at www.laylaholzer.co.uk.

Invictus

Invictus: Hobby-Horse /Unicorn

Say hello to Invictus*, the first hobby-horse I’ve created as a part of my polycorn-posse. For those who don’t already know Invictus is the result of my current Unicorn-Porn project. The project initially started with an inquiry into some Welsh myths and legends and has since morphed into this body of work which, amongst other things, question our understanding of ‘play’.

Invictus: Hobby-Horse/Unicorn

*Invictus, was so named because, no matter what he did, his erection was perpetual, was furnished with an engine eleven inches long and seven and fifteen-sixteenths inches around. Greater ones, who had difficulty stiffening, had been turned away to make room for him who, regardless of the quantity of discharges produced in a day, rose heavenward at the slightest touch.
