The Devil Museum, Kaunas

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
Posted in: Blog

Whilst off out on an adventure exploring Kaunas I discovered the wonderful Žmuidzinavi?ius Museum, or Devil’s Museum.

The museum houses a collection devil inspired artworks including small tapestries, masks and a lot of effigies of the devil carved from wood. Many of these items were collected by Lithuanian artist Antanas Žmuidzinavi?ius who initiated the collection in the first half of the twentieth century. The museum was established as a memorial to Žmuidzinavi?ius following his death and is housed in his old studio and home. His studio has actually been preserved as it was at the time of his death and is also available to view.

The collection of devils is absolutely wonderful and features every incarnation of the devil you can imagine from gluttonous caricatures to really rather creepy carnival masks which I must admit were amongst my favourite exhibits.

Each section of the exhibition is divided up thematically with short histories of the images and scenes depicted accompanying the objects informing visitors about all manner of religious and folk traditions relating to devils, demons and witchcraft. The top floor of the museum is dedicated to donations that have been made to the museum from visitor around the globe. Items such as those from the Far East and from Western Europe provide a nice contrast to the main Eastern European collection.

The Devil’s Museum is definitely one of the most wonderfully curious museuems I have had the pleasure of stumbling across and was full of grotesque inspiration.

Liddy Jacobs’ Plush Sculptures

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011
Posted in: Blog

Lidy Jacobs is the Dutch creator of these plush sculptures. It seems I’m not the only one fascinated by sexualised human-animal hybrid creatures

Despite my fondness for making plush toys and dolls I can’t believe that it hadn’t even crossed my mind to make a plush Unicorn sculpture. I’d be slightly wary making one now having seen these sculptures by Jacobs. I’ll have to give it some serious consideration though since there a lot of links between the materials/form and my current interests.

Clay Spawn

These little objects are the finishing touches for some new wire sculptures I’ve been working on for the last couple of months. That said I quite like them as objects in their own right.

Beastly Mannequin

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

This is just a quick snapshot of the very early stages of a new work.

Following on from my recent bestial drawings and embroideries I’ve returned to my Grotesques with this new mannequin’s head that I’ve started work on. It’s part of an ongoing exploration of the grotesque themes that inform certain strands within my practice.

The nose/mouth is simply moulded on with nylon reinforced air drying clay which is easily sanded and painted once dry.

Experiments with Light

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Exhibitions, News Feed

My work will be on display in Lithuania as a part of an exhibition hosted by The Textile Artists’ Guild in Kaunas this month. The exhibition, entitled Experiments with Light, has been curated by Jolanta Šmidtiene and Dovil? Vanagaite.

The brand new Kaunas arena’ media centre will be transformed for an international exhibition in which exhibits will be installed in the darkness and illuminated by ultraviolet light. This luminescent lighting will highlight details of the artworks enriching the aesthetic experiences of the visitors creating mystical effects and exhibiting unexpected approaches to textile art.

The exhibition will feature four of my luminescent sculptures including Wretched Rupture III (pictured above). There will be a launch event on Friday 23 September 2011 from 8.00 – 9.00pm and the exhibition will continue throughout the Textile festival. The Textile Guild will also be holding a number of workshops throughout the Kaunas Biennial.

Ben Lloyd: Don't You Worry About a Thing

I do love a good installation created from multiple like objects. This one is created by taking numerous pre-owned, cuddled, and loved soft toys and dunking them in building plaster. It’s rather effective seeing the crusty toys discarded across the gallery floor knowing that someone’s childhood memories are preserved within the brittle plaster shells. Although that sounds like a lovely memorial the work somehow seems tinged with sadness.

The work is by Ben Lloyd and is on display as part of an exhibition by former MA Fine Art students at the Old Library in Cardiff until the end of the month so pop in and have a look if you’re in town.

Wire Sculptures

Sunday, September 4th, 2011
Posted in: Blog

I’ve been indulging in a lot of drawing lately but I’ve not been neglecting my three dimensional work altogether. This is a little snippet of the current piece I’m working on in the studio at the moment. Created from wire and gloss paint the work is a continuation of studies that started with last year’s sculpture Nest.

I’ve been working on the piece for a few months as it’s a typical labour intensive creation but it’s nearing completion now. Keep your eyes peeled for images of the finished work in the not too distant future.

In Bloom

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

These are just a couple of quick snaps of some objects I’ve been making this week. They’re simple constructions made from synthetic fur an clay.

I’d been meaning to see how the two materials might work together for a little while before coming across Elysium Gallery’s current call for artworks from Wales based artists for their Venice vending machine project. I thought these might make an interesting submission for that project if the results were satisfactory.

Like my ultraviolet orifices these are made from a luminescent synthetic fur so I shall be photographing them again under a black light once night falls.

Gelitin’s Pink Bunny

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011
Posted in: Blog

I just stumbled across this lovely sculpture by the Austrian artist collective Gelitin. It’s constructed from fabric stuffed with hay and was apparently installed on the hillside in Italy pictured in 2005.

The group write of the piece “The things one finds wandering in a landscape: familiar things and utterly unknown, like a flower one has never seen before, or, as Columbus discovered, an inexplicable continent;
and then, behind a hill, as if knitted by giant grandmothers, lies this vast rabbit, to make you feel as small as a daisy
“. I would love to stumble across this giant rabbit whilst wandering through the hills.

I’ve been taken with the idea of creating an installation that intervenes in the landscape for quite some time having found previous inspiration in the work of Rune Gunneriuessen and the DOMA Collective. I’ve a few ideas bubbling under but I’ve yet to find the right means by which to really take these works further but I’ve no doubt my time will come.

In the meantime I hope you enjoy these pictures of Gelitin pink bunny. Their website is really worth five minutes of your time too as they have initiated some wonderful projects: www.gelitin.net.
