On The Map Exhibition Catalogue (2012)

This is the exhibition literature for the current ‘On The Map’ exhibition at Hastings Art Gallery and Museum which features my work ‘Hiraeth’. The leaflet fold up like a small ordnance survey map: I’m not sure if this is how the museum normally produce their exhibition literature but it certainly work well in the context of this exhibition.

The exhibition continues until the 17 June 2012; do check it out if you get the chance.

On The Map Exhibition Photographs

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Exhibitions

These are a few low resolution images that were sent to me of the ‘On The Map’ exhibition at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

A varied selection of maps from the Museum’s collection will be on display in the galleries until the 17 June 2012, including Samuel Cant’s 1746 Survey of Hastings, and William Gant’s 1852 Survey. An increasing number of contemporary artists are turning to cartography for inspiration, and this display features work by eighteen contemporary artists including my own ‘Hiraeth’.

The show will be on display for another two months so do take the time to pop in and see it if you’re in the area.

I’ve finished another of my Welsh map drawings; this one again using OS Map 141 is repeatedly inscribed with the words Yn Fyw. You can view more images of this piece along with the other drawings in the series in on my gallery pages here.

‘Hiraeth’ will be exhibited at Hastings Museum and Gallery from the 9 March until the 17 June as a part of ‘On the Map’ – an exhibition of historic maps and contemporary map art.

Tortuga

Monday, January 16th, 2012
Posted in: Blog

I’ve long been fascinated with maps, and so it seems are many of many of my fellow artists. I came across this lovely 17th Century map of the island of Tortuga very much by chance. Ye olde maps were very often drawn from a different perspective to the view from directly above that we’re familiar with today as seen in the picture above.

Tortuga is a Caribbean island that forms part of Haiti and was well know as a pirate stronghold during the 17th Century.

On The Map Exhibition

Saturday, December 10th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, News Feed

My work has been selected for an exhibition tentatively entitled ‘On The Map’ to take place at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in the new year.

‘The museum already has a permanent collection of historic maps but would like to extend the reach of the exhibition by exploring map-making in its broadest sense, bringing the subject up-to-date with a display of contemporary work inspired by maps and/or mapping techniques.’

Councillor Trevor Webb, lead member for leisure at Hastings Borough Council, said: “Hastings Museum and Art Gallery has wonderful collections which can provide all sorts of creative inspiration, and exhibitions like this are excellent ways of demonstrating the importance of historical artefacts to the work of contemporary artists.”*

The exhibition will take place from March to June next year. I’ll post further details nearer the time.

Paula Scher Maps

Friday, November 18th, 2011
Posted in: Blog

These maps by Paula Scher were brought to my attention by @stevewilde on Twitter last night. The detail is lost somewhat in images of this scale but the maps are more or less solely constructed from words. I’m particularly interested in them from the point of view of the map drawings I’ve been working on recently (examples here & here).

Like Scher I’ve been using words to create my map drawings. However, I’ve used words to create an additional responsive layer to the maps rather than to construct the map. My very first attempt at my map drawings was undertaken with a much thicker pen which obscured a lot more of the map beneath. I’m interested to have seen how Scher has created her works as I’m starting to consider ways in which I might develop my own body of work.
