Paper Horses: Women, Witchcraft and Sex

My good friend, the wonderful illustrator, Amelia Johnstone has landed herself her very own solo show in the lovely Material Gallery, London, this autumn. If you’re fond of challenging illustration and drawing you should definitely pop along to check it out whilst you can. Full details are below.

17th September – 16th October 2010

The paper pony folds herself up and is carried by the moon dwellers who are there to remember that they do not matter; that they are far away and nothing to the world, yet they gain perspective, to establish a stance; so that when they return in their varied capacities, they are BOLDER, BETTER, OBJECTIVE.

In the latest addition to her growing band of alter egos, the Paper Pony forms the basis of Amelia Johnstone’s latest collection of work in which she takes you to the moon, to laugh a little at the folly of our self obsessed human condition and sits with her friends. Talking, thinking and reflecting on the things which seemed to matter before, but now no longer do.

Saddened with the world, with it’s self indulgent, obsessive, greedy, blinkered culture, there is a wealth and richness in cultivating rather than consuming itself; eating itself, the voyeur narcissisticly boxed in bell jarred place.
Angela Carter writes of ‘the Curious room, crammed with wonders’ (1978), Amelia believes this room is the universe, crammed with curiosity and wonderment, rich enough to pass around, to carry in your pocket, like the paper pony, something you wanted can be imagined, in the imagination anything can happen, it is important to step back and remember that.

Join us in exploring Amelia’s latest addition to her band of alter egos with a hot ticket to Material’s London store and her latest exhibition “paper horses, witchcraft and sex”

“Paper Horses, Women, Witchcraft and Sex” will be on show at Material’s London store and will feature prints and original work from Amelia along with a range of wares designed in collaboration with the gallery.

Exhibition runs Thursday 17th September to 16th October 2010
Location Material 1.10 Kingly Court, Carnaby Street W1B 5PW

Blossom

I’ve been fortunate enough to have been chosen to exhibit my work as a part of the ‘A Moving Exhibition‘ programme of events in London. The first of these takes place at the AVA Gallery, East London from the 8 – 15 March 2010. If you’re in or around the area please  feel free to pop in and have a look around the show.  It promises to be an interesting exhibition.  If you would like details of the private view please contact me directly.

Press Release: A Moving Exhibition

A University of East London (UEL) student is the chief curator of a major travelling exhibition that is enabling artists from around the world and UEL students to showcase their work and build on London’s reputation as a cultural and creative capital.

Antria Pelakanou, is a MA Fine Art student at the School of Architecture and the Visual Arts (AVA) at UEL and she is the chief curator of a moving exhibition, a project which involves 7 UEL students and includes 56 other artists globally which will highlight creative art projects and initiatives currently in London. The project will be shown at five different venues around the capital including the Vyner Street Gallery in Hackney and Acquire the Arts in Battersea.

Antria, who is originally from Cyprus, said: “I’m really excited about curating this project; it’s been challenging and enterprising. During my internship at the Lloyd Gill Gallery recently, I learnt how a gallery is run and now I have a great opportunity to put it into practice. Everyone knows that London is the biggest city of Art in Europe – if not the world, and the best place for this exhibition. The range of art on display includes painting, drawing, sculpture and installations, everyone is welcome to attend and it’s free.”

The exhibition features some of the best postgraduate students at UEL and professional and emerging artists from around the world, including Brazil, Israel, and Portugal. Exhibiting artists include prolific photographer, Colin Hampden White, internationally renowned conceptual artist, Barbara Rosenthal, Lucy Apple, who has cerebral palsy and Vickie Fear, who focuses on using handmade props for performance pieces.

Grenville Davey, Programme leader in MA Fine Art at the AVA said:

“This is a really ambitious project that has been really well managed by Antria. It shows the exceptional talent we have at UEL and it also allows our students to gain an all round practical experience and business skills as they manage their work and engage with other artists globally.” The first moving exhibition will be at the Docklands campus AVA Gallery from the 8th – 15th March and it will move around London afterwards. An exhibition book featuring the artists and their work will be on sale at all the venues.
