Punch and Judy Puppet Show

This recording is of the Punch and Judy puppet show I performed with Layla Holzer at Milkwood Gallery on the 2 March 2013.

The puppets were made by myself and Layla whilst the characters were voiced by Peter Hathaway (Punch) and Amelia Johnstone (others).

The evening was a great hit and we had a packed out audience at the gallery. We also performed a shadow puppet play of Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky which I’ll also post up here for you to watch soon.

The Once Upon Again exhibition at Milkwood Gallery continues until the 9 March.

Star Sailor Sampler

Star Sailor Sampler by Spike Dennis & Layla Holzer

Star Sailor Sampler

This star sailor sampler is a a little test piece that I worked on with fairy tale illustrator Layla Holzer with a view to undertaking some collaborative work. The piece is inspired by a fairy tale that Layla wrote.

Layla has painted the scene out in gouache on linen. I’ve then embellished the painting with embroidered elements such as the moon and stars as well as the text.

Although it needs a little refinement I think we’re both happy with the outcome of this test piece.

Posted in: Blog, Exhibitions, News Feed

I have curated the inaugral exhibition by the Pack of Wolves entitled ‘Manifesto’ which opens at The Sho Gallery in Cardiff on the 4 September.

Those are the voices of my brothers, darling; I love the company of wolves. Look out of the window and you’ll see them.’ – Angela Carter

Manifesto is the first exhibition curated by the Pack of Wolves; a collective of artists and illustrators bound together by a respect for one another’s artistic practice, ambition and limitless imagination.

‘A manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. It often is political in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.’

This exhibition entitled ‘Manifesto’ presents the stance of the individuals participating in the Pack of Wolves which when combined will form the basis for the collective manifesto

The exhibition will be consist of thoughtful and enchanting new work by members of the Pack of Wolves including paper cut illustrations and hand embroidered typographic works amongst others.

Your Face Here

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Collaboration

It occurred to us that we are asking the lovely people of Cardiff to contribute to ProjectCardiff by nominating the city’s creative ambassadors but that we have not yet offered the prospect of anything in return.

We would like to redress the balance slightly and so we will be offering one lucky contributor the opportunity to have their portrait taken by the ProjectCardiff’s fabulous photographer Lann Niziblian. By nominating your creative hero(es) your name will be entered into a draw from which one lucky contributor will be selected to become Portrait #00 in the ProjectCardiff 2012 series.

To get involved visit www.projectcardiff.com and tell us who inspires you.

TO THE WOODS, TO THE WOODS

6 June 2012 – 1 July 2012

St Donat’s Arts Centre Gallery presents ‘To the Woods to the Woods’ an exhibition of fairytale work celebrating 200 year of the Brothers Grimm to coincide with the Beyond the Border Storytelling Festival at the end of June.

Curated by Spike Dennis; with work from 2nd year BA (Hons) Illustration Students from Cardiff School of Art & Design; Layla Holzer, Alice Eades and Jade Fisher, and featuring collaborations from Layla and Spike, Alice and Jade this exhibition explores some of the more gruesome themes of Grimm with an Angela Carter twist.

The extraordinary egg like puppets with concealed and revealing stomachs are bewitching, Layla Holzer’s interpretations of fairytales from The Pied Piper to Little Red Riding Hood bring a disturbing unnerving tingle down the spine, whilst Alice and Jade’s twelve dancing Princesses take you through their trap door to the enchanted world where each night they wear out their slippers.

The festival at the end of June will also feature live drawing projects coordinated by Dan Peterson documenting the tellers and their tales and the reactions of their audiences.

Exhibition Dates:

6 June 2012 – 1 July 2012
10:00am – 4:00pm Monday to Friday
(Open at other times during performances)

Collaboration Part 5: Hairy Heads

Monday, May 14th, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Collaboration, Work In Progress

We had another productive weekend this week working on our pieces for the fairytale exhibition next month. We didn’t get all the work done that we’d have liked to as we were awaiting the delivery of some materials but we still made good progress. Two of our characters, Little Red and Joringel were adorned with nice full heads of raven black hair as you can see above.

Collaboration Part 4: Illustrated Objects

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Here are some more snippets from the collaborative creatures I’m working on at the moment with Layla Holzer. I thin you’ll agree that the nightingale painted up by Layla is a real thing of beauty. That particular piece will form a part of the puppet that illustrates the Grimm’s Jorinda and Joringel story.

Collaboration Part 3: Body Parts

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Collaboration, Work In Progress

These are some images of the body parts I stitched together over the weekend as part of a collborative project I’m working on with the magical illustrator Layla Holzer.

The final puppets will take a puppet-like form constructed from a range of materials. These Louise Bourgeois-esque body parts have been constructed from pink towelling and silicon baby bottle teats for our Rapunzel figure.
