Shadow Play: Peter & The Wolf

Thursday, December 15th, 2011
Posted in: Blog

I headed over to Tommy’s Bar in Cardiff last night to watch some wonderous shadow puppet shows by Year 1 & 2 Illustration Students from Cardiff School of Art & Design. The puppets were absolutely beautiful and all of the performances were totally spellbinding.

This performance of Peter and The Wolf by Layla Holzer was the first of the night and set the perfect tone for the rest of the evening. This was followed by Hans Christian-Andersen’s The Snow Queen which was told in seven parts. Clips of those tales will be available to view via the Illustration Cardiff blog in the next few days.

Infographics Exhibition Opening

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Events, News Feed

*Image: From the ‘A Guiding Film’ series by Phil McCollam & Ellen Muellers

Exhibition opens: 4 October 2011

Exhibition celebration: Wednesday 12 October 2011, 7.00 – 10.00pm

I have organised and curated the forthcoming exhibition at The Sho Gallery to coincide with the Cardiff Design festival 2011. The Sho Gallery will host work by an international selection of artists and designers whose work addresses the current trend for information visuals, or ‘Infographics. The breadth of topics covered is vast; visitors to the gallery will be inspired, shocked, educated, enlightened, and perhaps most importantly, made to smile.

Difficult subject matter is dealt with by local creative designer Alix Martin as well as Mexican artist Juan
Manuel De J. Escalante. Using data provided by Welsh Women’s Aid (www.welshwomensaid.org) Martin examines the problem of sexual assaults against women in Wales and the UK. Similarly Escalante examines problems arising from within the society in which he lives in Central America through a generative work inspired by statistics from the Mexican Presidential Office relating to the deaths caused by the country’s drug wars.

A lighter side to the exhibition can be seen in a number of works such as Mario Klingemann’s Dada inspired response to the current trend for infographics and a series of ‘How To’ videos by American artists Phil McCollam & Ellen Mueller. During the Cardiff Design Festival visitors to Sho Gallery will not only be visually stimulated but they will have the opportunity to learn how to find water in the wilderness and how to communicate non-verbally with extraterrestrials.

Exhibitors:

Alix Martin \ Amy Kett \ Chris Glynn \ Daniel Ulf-Hansen \ Hole in My Pocket \ Innes Jones \ Juan Manuel De J. Escalante \ Mario Klingemann \ Matt McKenna \ Ninian Carter \ Phil McCollam & Ellen Mueller \ Rob Stevens \ See What You Mean

Photomarathon Exhibition

Sunday, July 31st, 2011
Posted in: Blog, News Feed
Topic Winner: My Entry Number – Work of Art (Olwen Moseley)

The Cardiff Photomarathon 2011 exhibition opened at the Old Library (aka. The Cardiff Story Museum) in the city centre this weekend. I took part in the event last month on the 11 June and so you can see the pictures that I shot along with copies of the images taken by the other 399 entrants.

Unfortunately I didn’t scoop any prizes for my efforts but one of my colleagues did; Olwen Moseley won the topic prize for My Entry Number: Work of Art (pictured above). The images by the category winnwers along with the overall winners take pride of place at the exhibition so you should pop in to take a look if you find yourself in Cardiff city centre during the next week or two.

The Photomarathon exhibition will be on show at The Old Library until the 20 August 2011 (10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Saturday and 11.00am – 4.00pm on Sunday).

If you’re not local, or just plain lazy, you can see a selection of the winning pictures on the BBC Wales website here; and you’ll find my own efforts on my blog here.

Cardiff Photomarathon 2011

Monday, June 13th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Events

Well this Saturday just past, the 11 June 2011, I took part in the Cardiff Photomarathon. In case you don’t already know, a Photomarathon is a photograph competition with a twist: Over 12 hours you have to take 12 pictures on 12 given topics. It’s not your physical condition, but your sense of improvisation, fun and creativity that is stressed throughout the Photomarathon. You can find out all about it on the Photomarathon website here.

I’m not the most technically gifted when it comes to photography and so as with the last time I took part in one of these events I opted for an approach which relying on creative inspiration rather than technical wizardry. It wasn’t all that easy to keep up this approach though due to the tight time constraints that you’re bound by.

I had thought that I would try to include a drawn/painted element in all my pictures but time got the better of me and so I did let slip with a couple of the pictures towards the end of the day.

Despite my lack of technical nous I had borrowed a lovely Nikon DSLR for the event and although set to automatic for much of the day I did discover how to fiddle with the shutter speed. Through a combination of luck and judgement I managed to get a couple of interesting shots out of this.

The pictures I took are all posted below. In keeping with the Photomarathon rules I’ve resisted any temptation I had to ‘tweak’ these photos and so the good, the bad, and the ugly are all here for you to see. The topics for all of the images are captioned just below each image.

My Number: Work of Art | Photomarathon 2011

The first picture of the day drawn with Posca Markers on a mirror. It took me a while to get a picture I was happy with partly because my mirror was grubbier than I’d realised and partly because I couldn’t use the flash in the mirror.

Inside Out | Photomarathon 2011

I thought painting my skull on my face would work quite nicely for this topic. Painting your own face isn’t as easier as I’d thought but I was pleased with the result, which is something akin to the love child of Baron Samedi and Heather Ledger’s Joker.

With hindsight I should probably have spent less time painting my face and more time taking pictures. Whoops!

Community | Photomarathon 2011

Having spent far too long on the first two topics I was two pictures behind by the time the 2.00pm check-in came about and so in a fit of desperation I opted to snap this graffiti along the alley between the Arts Institute and The Pen and Wig.

Superpower | Photomarathon 2011

Whilst still behind schedule I was struggling to come up with a superpower image. I’d tried my pants on over my trousers to no avail and the liquid I consumed for lunch turned out not to be creative juice.

Drama | Photomarathon 2011

Did he fall? Was he pushed?… I mocked this up with masking tape. I think I might have to find a partner in crime for next years event since it’s not as easy as it looks to draw around yourself.

The Great Outdoors | Photomarathon 2011

I got the Posca markers out again for this one at Llandaff fields. I wrote on a sheet of glass which I held in front the lens to create this image. I had hoped to get both the text and the background in focus, but in the end settled for this since I was in a rush.

Double | Photomarathon 2011

I figured that the majority of folk would opt for photographing two of something, a reflection, dice, or something along those lines. After racking my brains for a while I thought this would make for an alternative approach, doubling my entry number and re-shooting the first picture. Though I did forget the ‘no.’ that I included in the first shot.

My Secret | Photomarathon 2011

My secret Photomarathon tattoo with the 2011 hashtag, #PHM11. Well actually a drawing with Posca pens again.

I was rather chuffed with the drawing but unfortunately I couldn’t get a decent photograph of my foot that I was happy with so I settled for this one.

Element | Photomarathon 2011

As the day wore on my attempts at including a drawn/painted element within my images were starting to fail. Time was starting to run out which wasn’t helping so I settled on a photograph of the tungsten filament within one of the UV light bulbs I have at home.

Movement | Photomarathon 2011

As I mentioned above, I sussed out how to fiddle with shutter speed on the camera I was sing so managed to get this shot of Jesus trolling along. It’s not the most exciting shot in the world but never mind.

Obstacle | Photomarathon 2011

I was rapidly running out of time at this point and really struggling for inspiration. I don’ think the liquid lunch at Cardiff arts institute had helped!

This image isn’t going to set the world alight and start a revolution but it has a drawn element to it and so that did me just fine.

I Had a Dream | Photomarathon 2011

The final shot of the day. I cut out a thought/dream bubble from black card and used it as a frame through which to photograph my bed sheets. I used a long shutter speed to create the ‘dreamy’ effect. It was almost like painting with a camera which was quite exciting.

I’m quite happy with the way this turned out although I would have a liked a bit more time to play with it as there is still a lot I could improve on in this.

So there we have it. 12 topics captured in 12 hours. It was a fantatsic day out and I was cream crackered by the time I crossed the finish line. I might have had tired legs and a weary brain but I also had a large glass of red wine so it wasn’t all bad.

Aside from flexing my creative muscle one of the best things about the day is catching up with friends and acquaintances along the way to share our stories and photographs over a cold beer or two whilst contemplating the new topics as they were released. The addition of the Cardiff Arts Institute was a great idea as it cut down on the mad rush back and forth to Cardiff Bay to check-in. This of course allowed for a ‘slightly’ more leisurely approach and time for a little chinwag between shoots.

I shall just keep my fingers crossed that one of my images makes it to the long short-list and receives a magic dot when it comes to the exhibition opening.

In the meantime you can find out how other people responded to this years themes on Flickr in the Cardiff Photomarathon 2011 pool.

Dorkbot #2: Cardiff

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011
Posted in: Blog

I popped along to Dorkbot Cardiff last week. For those who don’t know, Dorkbot is all about people doing cool and creative things with electricity.

The image above is a portrait of your truly that was drawn by a robot/machine called Sketchy. A photograph was taken on a smartphone which was then converted to a vector image and transmitted via bluetooth to the machine by a little app that had been written for the handset.

The video below, shot by MCJammyCustard, shows the machine in action as it recieves the information and sets about drawing a portait.

In addition to Sketchy, there was also demonstrations from Paul Granjon, who was showing off his new 3D printer and robots that he controls with brainwaves, and two sculpture students from Cardiff School of Art and Design shared their work with arduinos, lights and gyroscopes, which although in it’s infancy, was fascinating.

Aside from simple geeky curiosity, one of the reasons I attended Dorkbot was to try and get some idea of how easy/difficult it is to have a tinker with electricity. As any one who has followed this blog for a while will now, I have long since aspired to incorporate some form of light or sound within my work.

Thursday nights event was rather inspiring and so I’m sure it won’t be long before I’m dusting off my soldering iron again. Watch this space.

If you want to find out more about Dorkbot, and future events, you should check out the website here: http://www.dorkbot.org/dorkbotcardiff/

A Peculiarly Pleasurable Curatorial Experience

Monday, November 22nd, 2010
Posted in: Blog
Photograph by Naomi Calvert: http://naomicalvert.co.uk

Well it’s been almost a week since the Peculiar Pleasures exhibition closed and so I though I’d take the time to reflect upon what was really my first proper curatorial experience. I’ve hung shows before but this was the first exhibition I have seen through from conception to conclusion. It has been both exhilarating and frustrating at times but over all it has been a great experience.

I never envisaged the project growing to such proportions. A call for artworks was issued over the summer following which well over one hundred submissions were recieved from all corners of the globe. Being aware that I needed to cast an objective eye over the submissions in order to make the final selection for the exhibition I convened a small selection panel consisting of myself and two colleagues; one an illustrator and one a fine artist.

Selecting work for the exhibition certainly was an interesting process. It was clear to see which artists had given some real consideration to the themes outlined in the call for work and so deciding upon our initial long list was relatively easy. In addition to those who had failed to fully understand, or thoroughly read the call, it was actually quite incredible how many artists had failed to adhere to the rather simple submission guidelines that I provided:

- Up to 3 images of your work (which should be saved as .jpg or .pdf files and be no larger than 1mb).
- A statement which identifies and contextualises your work (minimum 50 words).
- Relevant specifications of your work (media, dimesions, etc.)

I received all sorts of file types from compressed .rar files to 35mb .tif files as well as links to on-line portfolios. Many of these submissions were disregarded straight away as a result of this. We simply did not have the time to sit down and file these works or wade through someone’s website to see if they had created anything suitable. Fortunately the overall standard of work submitted was excellent. After much deliberation the successful artists were contacted and I awaited the delivery of their artwork with bubbling excitement.

Having exhibited at venues across the UK myself I am aware of the risk one takes in using the postal service or couriers to deliver artworks therefore it was it was quite surprising at the number of exhibitors that put their trust in these services given the ‘relatively’ short amount of time that it would have taken to deliver the work in person. Even more surprising; shocking even, was the lack of protection the works were provided with for their journey. One work in particular was wrapped in nothing more than a sheet of bubblewrap and a paper bag from a high street shoe shop! (upon informing the artist that the glass had broken in transit she exclaimed ” but I spent ‘ages’ wrapping that!”)

Incredibly however, the work, for the most part, all arrived safe and sound in Cardiff having travelled from all corners of the UK and as far afield as Puerto Rico. There were three breakages which fortunately were only to the glass/frames rather than the work itself and having sourced suiable new frames and glass to rectify the damage done in transit the show was all ready to hang on time. I was really pleased to have collated a body of work that really reflected the exhibitions title and I must admit I was like a big kid at Christmas unpacking all the Peculiar Pleasures that had been delivered.

Having hung the show the final thing left for me to do was collect our Parisian artist Arianne Foks from the airport ready for her performance at the exhibition opening. I was slightly nervous about hosting Arianne for her visit as the whole Peculiar Pleasures project was unfunded and she had paid her own way over to Cardiff to take part in the exhibition. Fortunately some good food and wine, a whistle-stop tour around the city, and a packed gallery for her wonderful performance ensured that she had a enjoyable visit.

The exhibition opening actually exceeded all my expectations. The turn out was fantastic with a good contingent from Cardiff’s local art scene and some new faces too as well as one or two rather illustrious visitors. It was fantastic to meet a number of the UK based artists on the evening who had made the trip to Cardiff from the north of England, the south coast and London too.

The lovely ladies of Milkwood informed me that there was a wonderful amount of traffic through the gallery during the exhibition period. I hope that much of that might have resulted from my persistent emails, tweets and other status updates.

All that is left for me now is to return some of the unsold work to the artists and complete the documentation of the project.

I’ve already made a note of all those things that I would approach slightly differently should I undertake another project like this. However, I’m not sure how quickly I will rush into such projects as it was a hell of a lot more work than I had anticipated which on top of my own practice, exhibitions, and work commitments has left me in need of some serious hibernation. That said, it was an absolutely fantastic experience and I’m thrilled to have met some absolutely wonderful artists as a result of it. Hopefully the conversations that have resulted from this exhibition will continue and lead to more wonderful, peculiar, and pleasurable projects in future.

Peculiar Pleasures took place at the Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff, from the 3 – 16 November 2010. Pictures of the event can be viewed on-line in this Flickr set.
