In Bloom

These are just a couple of quick snaps of some objects I’ve been making this week. They’re simple constructions made from synthetic fur an clay.

I’d been meaning to see how the two materials might work together for a little while before coming across Elysium Gallery’s current call for artworks from Wales based artists for their Venice vending machine project. I thought these might make an interesting submission for that project if the results were satisfactory.

Like my ultraviolet orifices these are made from a luminescent synthetic fur so I shall be photographing them again under a black light once night falls.

Snowden Soul

Monday, August 8th, 2011

I’ve had the luxury of spending the day drawing today. I got back to the maps that I started a couple of weeks ago. I managed to get my hands on another old copy of OS Map 107: Snowden. This time however, I swapped my chunky Posca marker for a Staedtler Pigment Liner. I’m much happier with the way this drawing is progressing as the weight of the marks/words obscures less of the map beneath leaving the shape of the land much more visible.

I also ordered myself a number of other OS Sheets which relate to specific areas of Wales so assuming the finished Snowden Soul map works out well there should be a number of other drawings to follow.

Soul Map

Sunday, July 31st, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

I’ve been working towards a new serious of drawings that have developed from a use of words and letters as marks. As you can see above the new works are drawn upon old Ordnance Survey sheets. This particular piece is being drawn upon OS Sheet 107: Snowdon (1962).

It’s considerably more difficult to concentrate on one of these map drawings than earlier drawings with words I created on plain paper. After having spent a good couple of hours hunched over the paper place names and other points of reference suddenly jump out and I find myself fighting an urge to write these words upon the map rather than my own elected mantra.

I’m quite happy with the way the works are progressing but I think I might need to look at using a finer pen. The maps are of course quite detailed and the colours are rather mute which has led to them being completely over powered by the weight of my words as they are currently written.

New Drawings

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

I’ve not been able to find much time for myself in the studio over the last couple of weeks. This has led to me doing a lot of drawing at home.

There are two avenues that I’ve been exploring both of which maintain a process of concious mark making similar to the way in which I have created my Mindspace drawings. Instead of a dense field of pencil crosses however, these new drawings are built up from interconnecting lines in triangular patterns to construct individual forms on the page.

The other drawings I’ve been working on are constructed entirely from words. Having recently seen Kim Dhillon deliver a paper on Fiona Banner’s work I was struck by the idea that words can be used as a mark-making tool similar to the crosses or triangles in my other drawings. I’m interested to find out what effect the repeated use of words in this way has upon the image. I’d also like to explore the use of colour within these works as words and colours can often conjure up different associations.

Orifice Experiment

Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

I’ve been conducting a few experiments with light recently with some new sculptures that I have created from white fabrics. I was interested to see how UV light affected the appearance of the work.

I’ve been happy with the results so far. Under this light the objects have started to take on appearance that reminds me of the bio-luminescent creatures that live in the depths of the ocean and although it’s perhaps not so apparent in the photograph, I also found that the tactile qualities of the work became somewhat exaggerated in the darkness.

Having undertaken a little research it seems that I might be better off using a blacklight rather than a UV light to illuminate the objects. A blacklight is constructed from black glass that filters out all but UV rays rather than having a filament designed to emit UV light. Watch this space,

Little Green Man

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

I’ve been fiddling with the template that I developed for my black dolls for quite a while trying to adapt so that the arms are composed from separate pieces that can be jointed. In theory this seemed like a straight forward enough operation but in practice it has taken a lot longer than expected trying to get it ‘just right’.

This little green man is constructed from the final template that I’m going to use for some more individual pieces that will hopefully combine elements of my earlier dolls with my more recent ‘Orifices’ in an exploration of the abject body.

I’m actually quite keen on the stitches in this work which are something of a happy accident as I had no green thread left. It gives the object that Frankenstein’s monster kind of feel. It won’t be particularly apparent when working with fur due to the hair but is something to consider for the future.

Materials used for the little green man:

  • Felt
  • Cotton Thread
  • Polyester Fibres
  • Clay

Doll Composition

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

I had the opportunity this evening to photograph the black dolls that I’ve been making recently as a mass. It has always been my intention to show them as one piece of work, or installation, so it was great to have the space to examine the ways in which they might be displayed.

My initial configuration was very formal as the dolls were displayed as a regimented unit:

After a little tinkering I broke up this formal configuration to establish something a little more loose. This certainly felt a lot more comfortable. I want the dolls to transmit the sense there is a life within them, to have some sense of movement. The regimented layout above feels more like the dolls are part of a lifeless display akin to what you might find on a shop shelf.

I’ve a few more dolls to make yet but it’s been great to have the chance to play with these objects at this point. It has give me an opportunity to take a step back from the making process and view the work in a context outside of the studio.

For those who’re interested the materials I used to construct these dolls are:

  • Fabric
  • Cotton Thread
  • Clay
  • Plaster
  • Polyester Fibres

Porcelain Doll

Saturday, May 7th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

I’ve been undertaking some work with porcelain dolls at the moment which is a progression of the work that started with the Bestial Drawings I completed earlier this year.

The drawings was originally leading towards a number of costumes, or wearable sculptures, but I jumped the gun a little in terms of the work I was undertaking. I’ve taken a step back from the headpieces I was working on earlier this year in order to explore the theme that interest me on a smaller scale.

Wire Work

Monday, April 11th, 2011
Posted in: Blog, Work In Progress

These are two pictures from some current work in progress that is being developed from the piece Nest I posted earlier this year.

Although at first glance this work might appear to be, aesthetically, at odds with other work I’ve been undertaking lately it has evolved from the same starting point.

It can be viewed in parallel to the more figurative work I have been undertaking lately and once these works are finished I hope that upon further inquiry viewers will start to make the connections that link the different works together.
