I’ve been having a look at the work of Chiharu Shiota lately who is a Japanese artist currently working out of Germany who exhibited at the Haunch of Venison earlier this year.
I’m not so keen on some of the performative aspects of her practice; it was the use of multiple found objects that initially attracted me to her work however, it is her work with thread/yarn that really excites me. She creates dense webs within the gallery spaces within which you can often find an object ensnared. Memories are apparently important to Shiota’s work and these works give a suggestion that she is sharing a personal experience but by placing these huge elaborate barriers between the objects and spectators she is only comfortable with us looking, not touching.
