I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by Dr Keireine Canavan at Cardiff School of Art & Design this evening which focussed on her reserach into Al Sadu Weaving in Kuwait. It was an absolutely fascinating lecture and I was engrossed from start to finish. What really fascinated me about these beautiful textures was the repeat patterns. My interest in repeated forms, processes, etc. is well documented throughout this blog so it will come of no surprise to regular readers that this tickled my fancy. What was particularly intriguing was the level of patterns within patterns that are embedded within these beautiful textiles. That is the structural pattern that occurs within the weave combined with the aesthetic patterns that are established through the colours that are employed.
In many respects it is a world away from my own practice but it was a fantastically inspiring lecture which set my imagination alight with ideas about patterns, structure and texture.
